7 Things to Do in Bewitching Marrakech

March 14, 2022

Each place you visit will have its own allure, its own activities and experiences and you will want to enrich your travels by immersing yourself in some of them. When you’re heading to enticing Marrakech in Morocco, there will be no shortage of things to see and do to elevate your vacation experience.

Here are seven of those, so when LVH is building your itinerary, you might ask us to include some of them when you’re in Africa’s Capital of Culture!

Bahia Palace

Abu “Bou” Ahmed was a slave turned vizier. He spared no expense constructing and decorating this gorgeous 150-room palace. There is no word other than, “wow” when you see the painted, gilded ceilings, polychrome zellige tiling and carved stucco! This palace – whose name is roughly translated as “beautiful" – is certainly that and then some. If you’re out and about, you can escape from the midday sun and head to the palace’s shaded areas and get lost in all the intricate detailing while cooling off.

Souk Semmarine

Souks, or markets, are one of the things making Marrakech so captivating and Souk Semmarine is the largest. Wander around this labyrinth of wares and shopkeepers who are eagerly waiting to get your attention to sell Moroccan products like rugs, leather goods, lanterns, light fixtures, silverware and crockery of all shapes and sizes. You might be able to choose an original tagine cooker! This is the place to be if you’re looking for an authentic Marrakchi experience. Just a reminder – vendors love to haggle even when you don’t need to. It’s part of the overall experience.

Musée Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent loved spending time in Marrakech so much he bought Jardin Majorelle in 1980. Opened next door to the gardens in 2017, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent is dedicated to the designer’s couture legacy and has a permanent display of hundreds of garments over his 40-year career. The YSL collection is an amazing body of work even non-fashionistas can appreciate. It’s housed in one of the city’s most striking buildings, alongside a beautiful garden café, bookshop, temporary exhibition hall and auditorium.

Musée des Confluences

The Musée des Confluences is the former governor’s palace and was once home to notorious Thami El Glaoui, Lord of the Atlas. The building now houses the archaeological collection of American Patty Birch and puts on shows exploring the intersection of eastern and western cultures. This is probably the most beautiful building in the medina. Covered in intricate detailing, its coffered cedar ceilings, geometric tiling, and stucco are worked into elaborate floral motifs. When you’re here, stop into what is arguably Marrakech’s best place for coffee, Bacha Coffee House, serving more than 40 brews.

Hammam de la Rose

A hammam is a public bath house and a Moroccan institution. You will find one in every neighborhood in Marrakech. Moroccans go at least once a week for a relaxing scrub, but also to reconnect with family and friends. Hammam de la Rose is one of Marrakech’s best hammams. This upscale venue provides a restorative experience offering traditional treatments such as scrubs, masques and massages in luxurious surroundings.

Ateliers d’Ailleurs

These are hands-on workshops with Marrakchi maalems (master craftsmen) in their studios. Learn how to make your own pair of babouche slippers or follow a course in tadelakt (plaster), basketry, pottery or cooking. Here’s your chance to meet serious artisans on their own terms and hear how they became masters of their crafts. It also gives you a new appreciation of the work that goes into the goods offered in the souk.

The Mellah

The Mellah is the Jewish quarter of Marrakech. It has undergone extensive renovations. This area is not as frequented by tourists, but we have a feeling they’ll soon catch on, so you might want to visit the area before that happens. Remember to take in the Al Azama synagogue and the extraordinary Miara cemetery.
