Alpine Chic: The Evolution of Ski Fashion

January 12, 2023

Skiing has been a popular winter activity for decades, and the fashion associated with it has evolved over time. From the stylish and luxurious designs of the 1920s to the chic looks of the 1940s, skiing fashion has come a long way. In the 1960s, Vogue magazine featured ski wear in its pages, making it a fashionable style for women all over the world. Nowadays, ski fashions have become more modern and sophisticated than ever before, making them perfect for any winter adventure.

The 1920s and 1930s

Ski fashion in the 1920s and 1930s was all about making a statement. With more people taking to the slopes, stylish ski clothing became popular among high society socialites and those frequenting ski resorts. Popular fashion magazines began to feature ski fashions, showcasing the latest trends in chalet-style clothing. From luxurious fur coats to chic sweaters, the 1920s and 1930s saw a surge in ski fashion that continues to influence modern looks today.

The 1940s and 1950s

Synthetic materials began to replace previously 100% wool outfits. As a result, pants got tighter and shirts got looser for more mobility. In the 50s the first “stretch pants” were invented. They were very similar to leggings but were made out of a thicker material.

The 1960s and 1970s

The 60s was a very pivotal decade with the introduction of double lens goggles to prevent fogging and plastic ski boots to replace leather ones. Puffer jackets and brightly patterned sweaters paired with stretch pants were the most common looks seen on mountains. Elegant and expensive furs also made a comeback. Beanies and headbands were worn to keep heads warm. The style was still elegant but gaining functionality. The 1970s brought bright colors, fitted jackets, and matching pants. Neon colors grew in popularity as synthetic ski clothes were all the rage now. Fleece was introduced for the first time allowing for more effective layering.

The 1980s and 1990s

The 80s was the decade of neon onesies and spandex. Lightweight but warm materials were used replacing bulky layers. It was the beginning of technology now known as gore-tex – a lightweight, waterproof material that maintains warmth. Neon jackets could be seen paired with a nice pair of Levis jeans and some gaiters. Onesies and bibs were still all the rage. Neon colors were as bright into the 90s. Lightweight waterproof materials were continually being advanced upon.

The 2000s

Baggier styles were all the rage. Loose-fitting outer layers paired with synthetic fleeces resembled a consummate snowboarder style. Neon colors began to fade, replaced by more sedate, neutral hues.

Real fur made a resounding comeback in 2010. Puffer coats were all the rage and came in all colors – even metallic shades. People wanted to make a statement on the slopes and the fashion showed it.

The Present Day

Today’s ski fashions are a happy mix of the past. Bibs and onesies are on the rise again. Two-piece kits made up of bibs and matching color scheme jackets are also popular. Baggy gear is still more popular than fitted equipment since it allows for more mobility and tons of layering.
