Five fine dining restaurants in Marrakech for local food
Many luxury travelers want to know something about the dining scene of a potential destination before making a final decision on a visit.
Rest assured, Marrakech will receive rave reviews from you when it comes to fine dining providing delicious local cuisine. Here are five restaurants we have chosen for you to give you an idea of what’s in store for your palate!
La Grande Table Morocaine
This restaurant is undoubtedly the most refined in all of Marrakech. The opulent La Grande Table Morocaine is tucked inside the Royal Mansour Hotel. The dining room is richly decorated with an elegantly and traditionally attired staff. Everything on the menu is delicate and delicious. Chef Yannick Alléno (who has three Michelin stars) elevated La Grande Table Morocaine to one of the most well-known fine dining establishments in Morocco.
We recommend: The lobster seffa medfouna (vermicelli sweetened with raisins, almonds and cinnamon); the mullet with chermoula (garlic, cumin and coriander marinade); or the lamb tagine with quince and orange blossom honey.
Here the city’s great sip glasses of gris (Moroccan rosé) and gift their palates with the traditional cuisine of Marrakech. Le Marocain is an ode to hospitality in a country where guests are welcomed as friends in a magical and warm setting. The Moroccan cuisine of regional families is magnified by Chef Rachid Agouray who brilliantly captures all the subtlety and colors of Morocco around typical and sophisticated dishes. Essential tagines and couscous are cooked with passion and encourage conviviality.
We recommend: Chicken tagine "R'hamna" with olives and candied lemon; lamb couscous with seven vegetables; or grilled Mamounia, chicken, kefta, merguez, lamb, tomatoes and grilled onions. For dessert, try the orange blossom, lemon and honey pastilla.
Le Trou au Mur
The menu at James Wix’s retro Moroccan restaurant draws straight from grandma’s cookbook. Here you can sample traditional specialties. Not so traditional is the contemporary, oriental décor and the tasty cocktails best enjoyed on the roof terrace. Le Trou au Mur is a breath of fresh air in the city's fine dining scene. It’s laid-back, intimate and above all, totally serious about Moroccan food.
We recommend: Berkoukesh (handmade pasta with a herb and tomato sauce); tride (shredded pancakes with lentils, chicken and saffron); or tihane (offal stuffed with spiced kefta, olives and lemons).
A trip to Marrakech is totally complete when you’re staying at one of the most elite homes in the city, Villa Gemma. This glorious home – with all its high-tech amenities is a totally modern place in the heart of the history of Marrakech. This fabulous traditional restaurant is set in a gorgeously decked-out riad deep in the north of the medina. It was one of the first addresses in these parts to offer a multi-course gastronomic Moroccan diffa (feast) for a set price and 20 years on it has lost none of its shine. You’ll relish the enchanting décor, private lounges, breathtaking and panoramic views from the terrace of the medina and the Koutoubia of Marrakech.
Take aperitifs on the terrace, then settle down for a satiating meal in one of the lavishly decorated salons.
We recommend: Meat tagine with seasonal vegetables; Beldi chicken with olive; or meat and vegetable couscous. If you have room, the honey pancakes are lovely.
