What to Pack for a Private Island Vacation

October 14, 2022

A remote island vacation can be one of the most relaxing and liberating experiences. Just sitting and being in all the untouched beauty of nature – wind in your hair, the sunshine on your face, the lapping of turquoise waves on powder white shores – can indeed be the medicine needed for stress relief.

Once you have made the decision a private island stay is just what you’re needing, being prepared for the time you will spend on a magical slice of paradise in terms of what to pack in your luggage, may make your trip even more eventful.

With that, here are some items you will be needing for your trip (and some you might just want to leave behind):

Two Swimsuits

Depending on how long your stay will be, packing at least two swimsuits makes sense. Since many suits are layered, they take longer to dry and the last thing you want is to put on a wet swimsuit the next day. You could pack one suit for activities like snorkeling and paddleboarding and one for sunning. Here are two we like:

One Shoulder One Piece Swimsuit by Saint LaurentThis beautiful one-piece black swimsuit is made in Italy and has an asymmetrical cut-out detail on the front and ruched fabric detailing throughout. It’s totally lined, ultra comfortable and stylish. Retails for US$1,032.

Add a touch of golden treasure to your private island respite when you don this lovely bikini by D&G. It features the metal DG logo embellishment on the lacing of the triangle bikini top, making it a classic style yet with real personality. Retails for US$725.

Polarized Sunglasses

Polarized shades cut the glare of the sun reflecting off the azure waters of your private island. These are especially helpful if you have sensitive eyes. Oversized square-frame sunglasses by Gucci are the epitome of style. The gold metal web detailing on the frames and a mirror lens with GG motif gives a subtle nod to the House’s heritage and will give you 100% UVA/UVB protection. Retails for US$615.

Sunscreen

Not all SPFs are created equal and it’s crucial to have a top sunscreen to protect your delicate skin when you will be spending much of the time outdoors on a private island. Professionals suggest opting for broad-spectrum SPF (this means it will protect you from UVA and UVB rays) of 30 or higher. Here is a list of some of the most favored on the market:

  • EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46;
  • Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops SPF 50;
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen SPF 60;
  • Shiseido Clean Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+;
  • Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF 40;
  • Tula Protect+Glow Daily Gel Broad Spectrum SPF 30.
Remember your sunscreen!

UV Rashguard

When you’re making your packing list, be sure to include a sun blocking top on your list. A rashguard is a shirt that does not allow the sun’s penetrating rays through and is ideal for water activities when you’re spending a prolonged time in or on the water.

This Doheny rashguard by Solaris features color-blocked raglan sleeves, delicate neck opening, and slim-fitting extra-long length.

The Brando, Tetiaroa, Pacific Ocean Islands

Thirty miles north of Tahiti sits the small island of Tetiaroa. The stunning resort, The Brando, on the atoll, is named after the late iconic actor Marlon Brando, who chose it as his sanctuary. If you are looking for a truly magnificent private island holiday, staying at this incomparably gorgeous resort, is it. Here, you will find luxury lodging ranging from one, two, and three-bedroom villas. Exotic palapa thatched rooftops sit atop modern estates brimming with 21st-century glamor. Lofty vaulted ceilings and warm exotic timber cladding line spectacular free-flowing and airy common areas. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls douse the interiors in spellbinding ocean scenes ensuring a delectable sense of oneness and harmony with the outdoors. Thirty-five bedrooms provide accommodations for up to 70 guests. You will receive full services and support.

Cover Up

A beautiful cover up can take you from the beach to dinner in a pinch. You will find a cover up to be one of the things you’re definitely glad you packed and it doesn’t take up a lot of room in your suitcase. The paisley print kaftan cover up from Etro elegantly features side sleeves, a delicate pattern and is fashioned from crepe and silk. Retails for US$1,170.

Sandals

Since you’re on an island, you will want to make sure your footwear is waterproof. You might want to leave your favorite designer sandals at home. If you are planning on exploring the island on foot, packing lightweight shoes is a good idea. But for the most part, a couple pairs of fashionable, yet comfortable sandals will do. Bottega Veneta makes a sweet sandal in silver, gold and pistachio colors that would be perfect for the beach! Retails for US$780.

Sand-Resistant Beach Blanket

If you love the feeling of lying on the sand, but don’t want sand all over everything, a sand-resistant beach blanket needs to be in your suitcase. These are lightweight and quick drying with weights on the edges so the wind doesn’t carry them away. Some even have pockets for your belongings.

A sand-resistant beach blanket can save you a lot of trouble having to wipe sand from off yourself and your belongings.

Underwater Camera

When you go snorkeling or diving, you may want to capture all the glorious marine life you’re encountering. Having an underwater camera is the ideal piece of equipment to do that. We recommend the GoPro Hero 11 Black Creator Edition. You can take Hollywood quality images and videos with this gadget. It makes vlogging, filmmaking and live streaming easier than ever and it comes with tons of mounting options. With extended battery power, you can power shoot all day long. Retails for US$790.

Takeaways

Just remember to pack lightweight, breathable clothing! Summer dresses, sandals, flip flops, t-shirts, tank tops, and shorts make the best wardrobe for your private island vacation. Very formal outfits aren’t necessary.

Also keep in mind what not to pack:

  • Bulky clothing or too many clothes at all;
  • Delicate items easily damaged when wet;
  • Unnecessary valuables or electronics;
  • Bath towels.
